This fall, a group of compassionate and committed friends in Grande Prairie organized a ‘Milk it for Mully’ campaign to raise $25,500 for MCF to drill a borehole, by collecting the recycling levy from used milk containers.  The community rallied around the cause and raised over $43,000 for the Mully Children’s Family!

The campaign ran for 8 weeks from September 29 – November 20, involving 23 schools, 9940 students and 8 churches from the surrounding communities of Bezanson, La Glace, Teepee Creek, La Crete, Clairmont, Wembley, Beaverlodge and Sexsmith.  Local Starbucks, McDonald’s and Jeffrey’s Cafe Co. also got involved and donated their used milk containers to the campaign.

The bottle collection blitz on Saturday, November 7 brought in over $4,000 alone!  One of the committee member’s family drove around all day collecting recycling from their neighbours to bring to the blitz so they could boost their schools chances!

Local businesses like Aquatera, Bank of Montreal, Hertz Equipment Rentals, Logo Tech, McDonalds, Starbucks, Jeffrey’s Café Co., and Centre 2000 sponsored the blitz and made it a huge success!

The campaign even made it to Parliament Hill and was announced in the House of Commons by Chris Warkentin MP.

Over $15,000 was raised through recycling alone and the additional $28,000 came from people in the community who called in wanting to help by donating to the cause.

Students from local schools had many creative ideas to raise money, including:

> Getting an old car from the auto wreckers and having the students pay money to take a hit with a hammer

Car bash fundraiser

> Making and selling friendship bracelets and necklaces for their school

> A grade 6 class made a music video and posted it on the “Milk It For Mully” blog

– Gerard’s grade 9 class raised money for us by doing “time for change” where the kids brought in as much change as they could and however long it took the teachers to “roll” the money was free time for them as students.

> All of the schools decorated their collection box and Kateri Mission School’s box was selected to hold non perishable food donations that were brought to the College on Dec. 5th which went towards the less fortunate in Grande Prairie.

Huge thanks to the committee in Grande Prairie who worked tirelessly to organize and execute this very successful campaign: Alden & Natasha Harms, Henry & Irene Hamm, Shawn & Chantal Dyrkach, Rick & Margaret Friesen, Chris & Michelle Warkentin, Jim & Gail Biggs, and Chrisy Harms.
